Digital Satelite Channels in Iran
Aslan writes about Iranian Satelite TVs in Iran now:
Posted by hoder at April 29, 2003 1:46 AMThese days Iranians can buy digital satellite dishes, which will get the signals of around 180 channels. Most of them are from non-English speaking European countries; there are a few music channels, few movie channels, and some adult channels. Although not everyone can afford to have these dishes, and although not everyone is comfortable to keep this illegal thing in their house; however, the number of people who get it, is rising day by day. It's amazing for me to hear that my friend, back in Iran, has heard and seen Kylie Minouge's latest single sooner than me in Canada!

Babak has brought up a really good point. Ban of satellites in our country is just another way to piss people off. it has nothing to do with information that they can have access to via satellites. Even people know this for a fact.

hi, in the post below, you say u dont know about internet card prices. in iran internet cards are (based on its ISP) 1, 2, 5, 10, 20 hours and ... , and their prices are variable based on traffic, speed, busy line and.... but a medium price is: 10 hours: 3000-5000 tooman , 20 hours: about 7000 tooman, and one month unlimited is 15-25000 tooman.

The old shakedown, eh? And I thought it was all different, especially when the article said they could get "adult" channels. I took it at face value that it was about the information. Good thing my cat is white with brown ears ,;-)
Thanks for filling me in.

Depends, sometimes you can bribe the guy who has shown up at your doorstep. The money must be enough to convince both himself and his boss - because he has to take back either the dish or the money (very similar to most junior traffic policemen) :))) otherwise the dish+receiver will be taken away, sometimes be destroyed, and probably sometimes be sold to dealers who will sell them again :) "Ban of satellite TVs" is not because they are afraid of the information people are receiving (because people receive more information through internet easily). It's some kind of "show of muscle" and "control" over the community. If not satellite TV, then women's dress, if not women then they will find some other issue, like automobile tunning, mountain hiking, or even having "Brown cats with white ears" :))

What happens if you are caught with a dish on your roof? Do they take you to jail? Do they destroy the dish? If many are getting them, will the government eventualy just leave the things alone?
