God bless H&M

We're just back from a Monday morning walk in the gorgeous Banhofstarsse in Zurich. Nasser dropped us there at 9 AM when nobody was actually on the street and then picked us up at 3 PM.

It sounds funny, but let me honestly say that prices here are not that different with Toronto, except there is no GST and PST (tax) added on things you buy. So the unbelievably cheap and hip cloths at the H&M tempted us into buying some 400 Francs of good-looking clothing. (Black linen jacket for 50 Franks, can you believe it?) Although H&M have launched it's first store in Toronto, I don't think it would be as cheap, especially after adding the Canadian Tax. So I think we should get a new suitcase.

We actually experienced the cleanest and most modern public washroom--we paid one franc each however. But I should tell you that paying for a nice and clean public washroom when you badly need it, is much better than having no public washroom like Toronto. Why the Toronto municipality don't do the same? Suddenly they become socialists when it comes to urgent needs?

Dear Hossain, I found your site through your post at Rebecca McKinnon's. I live just outside of Zuerich. Please don't let people get you down due to typographical errors. I'm a native English speaker and I understood everything you were saying.:-) Keep up the good work.

Hey Hossein Every thing is blessed in Switzerland. I lived there four years. My hope is that I can live there in future, after getting some years of American and Canadian experience!!! If I am correct, Jamalzadeh lived in one of the French cantons not Zuerich, I think Laussane.

Most european cities I've been to had public toilets in streets, at least in main streets. I also agree with the idea of pay-and-go toilets, they earn enough money to hire a full time cleaner. I also remember public toilets in tehran, doesn't anyone remember? They have closed down all of them, but there were a number of them around the place (always dirty and smelly though).

Come on man! Gorgeous Bahnhofstrasse!? Take a walk in the neighborhoods North East side of the main train station (Hauptbahnhof) to see the real Zurich unveiled. If you were not living in Toronto I would have believed you. I lived in Toronto for 6 years before moving to the states. I also visited Zurich last August. Bahnhofstrasse is nice but it is nothing compared to Toronto's Yorkville Street or Eaton and Yorkdale shopping malls. Try to stay in Europe a little bit longer, you will appreciate Toronto once you are back. Then you'll call it: home, sweet home! By the way if you get the chance try to go to the mountains or visit Luzern which is a much nicer city.

Bahnhofstrasse not Banholfstarsse!! 400 francs not 400 Francs!! And just for ur knowledge,in Switzerland we have 7,6% VAT (Value Added Tax) rates on all supplies and services subject to taxation."On the basis of article 36 of the federal Law on the Value Added Tax"!

First of all, I see typos all over in many other blogs too. Plus, who really cares about typos in blogging? Good observations Hossein. But I have a few comments. Sales taxes and in general VATs are already included in prices in Europe. I have a conspiracy theory that businesses and manufacturers push vendors not to add VAT on top of tag prices. When they cannot pass the psychological effect of posting a $100 item as $99.99, they will not let VAT to be added to the price. The clothing prices are cheaper in Europe and the quality is better than what you find in North America. The cost of living, though, is something that definitely surpasses N. American rates. About public washrooms in Toronto: Where exactly inside the concentration of the privately-owned high-rises in Toronto should the City Hall open washrooms? Next time in Toronto when nature calls consider this: All stores that offer drink or food have washroom. In Toronto (and I think all over Canada) store owners are kind enough to let unpaid customer use their facilites. Ask them. Moreover, throughout the Path in Toronto, shopping malls, there are countless washrooms. I have quite the opposite experience.

It is really nice that you write in English, but there are quite a few errors in your writing. You will find them if you read it twice. Hamid
