Tehran Fears Strong Earthquake
A possible quake in Tehran which can lead to hundreds of thousands victims and maybe a complete political chaos, has captured Tehranians' minds since the last week's not-very-strong quake in North of Iran which was felt in Tehran as well.
Rumors that some scientists have predicted a higher possibility of this quake to happen in the coming days, has really created a sense of fear and panic among Tehranian.
Just by reading the last posts by many Persian blogs will give you a sense of how worried and frightened they feel these days. Many has even left Tehran for a safe place.
This has almost sidelined all the political news about the new parliament, Chalabi's connection with Iran, etc.

What are the ruling clerics' position on earthquakes? Do earthquakes have any religious significance in Iran, or are they considered random natural events? Just curious...

I read an interesting post by Davood at Iransara in January. He wrote that the Mullahs have completely ignored the urgent need for seismic retrofitting of older structures throughout Iran. This was a major reason that the Bam earthquake resulted in such catastrophic loss of life. I hope that, for the sake of the millions who live in Tehran, that a major earthquake does not occur there before the safety issues of old buildings can be addressed. Perhaps, the widespread fear of the populace will finally force the Mullahs to take some swift and definitive action.
