Blogs in Canada

Canada, to me as a brand new citizen, is very much about independence and diversity. This is also what blogs are mainly about. So you would think blogs should be a hot thing in Canada, which is not really the case yet.

For this, I mainly blame the Canadian media who seem to be not getting the idea of blogs yet and have even a negative attitude toward blogs in general.

So I hope the Northern Voice conference gets some good Canadian news coverage and it paves the way for more similar conferences and more public awareness about weblogs.

Blogs can contribute a lot to the Canadian society.

Hoder! Congratulations on your citizenship. :-) If I'd known, I would have baked you a patriotic cake decorated with the flag, or something! I can see why Blogs in Canada aren't as embraced as they are in other countries. Canadians aren't particularly politically active people in that the average person doesn't like to give his/her opinion on anything which might offend others: politics, religion, economics, ... Instead, we tend to be busy minding our own business.

Welcome to the country Hossein. Although I agree that mainstream media in Canada may not be getting it yet, the young journalists are certainly understanding this new phenomenon. they get it becaus they are also the ones contributing to them. As it looks right now, blogs are here to stay How they evolve over the next few years, as the old cronies in the business get wind of them, is going to be one of the most fascinating aspects of journalism this century. Again, welcome to the country and best of luck to you and your blog.

"So you would think blogs should be a hot thing in Canada, which is not really the case yet." No, I wouldn't. Why would blogs be a "hot thing" in Canada? Blogs are big in the States since desparate groups --whether right-wingers who hoped to have a come-back after getting 8 years of Clinton or a former government of Vermont who hoped to reach to people and fund his campaign-- are using this capitial. "For this, I mainly blame the Canadian media who seem to be not getting the idea of blogs yet and have even a negative attitude toward blogs in general." I don't think that Canadians are too naive to buy into anything that media pitches. Right across the "pond" where media is huge and blogs are promoted by the giants like the BBC and Guardian, blogs have a long way to catch on. Why? Again, people don't buy everything that media tries to sell. If blogs are going to catch on, the push won't come from the media to people. People will push it to the media. Not the other way around..

The MSM's in Canada, will watch what the US counter parts are doing before dipping thier feet into Blogpshere. Many of the MSM in CA, actually have a lot of investors from southside. Therefore, a lot of control with what the Canadian MSM do or dont do !! or if I may go further could be write or not to write or broadcast !! Its a tricky proposition..
