Fashion louder than words
In today's Iran, sporting a necktie with your suit says much more than the actuall words you could possibly say, especially if you are announcing you are planning to run for president.
Ebrahim Yazdi, the most prominent of the main nationalist party in today's Iranian political scene, Nehzat-e Azadi (Iran Freedom Movement), has officially announced his candidacy today.
His picture was on the cover of Shargh (PDF).

Mehrzad Boroujerdi, in his "Iranian Intellectuals and the West: the triumph of nativism," talks about the Farsi term "fokoli," which derives from the French word "faux-col" and is used to refer to someone who wears a necktie or bow-tie. He points out that it was also used as a pejorative term for anyone who was Western-educated or wore Western dress.
Do Iranians still use this word?

remember that "nationalist" in western context has a right wing, anti immigrant message to it, where as MELI in Iran has a whole differnet meaning, therefor I think "Liberal" is a better term than national.

Just the other day I was reading an interview with him that had taken place a few years ago and I thought to myself "I wonder if Yazdi is still alive". It looks like he is alive and looking quite well; this should add an interesting twist to the election show we will soon be witnessing.
