Avoiding Zahra Kazemi's fate

Reading the account of the doctor who had examined the body Zahra Kazemi after her tragic death, I think it'd be very stupid of me to go to Iran without two things:

  1. A loud announcement about my visit to Iran so everybody would be prepared to support if anything happened
  2. An Iranian press card, which gives much more safety and freedom as a journalist.

The first one is not very difficult with the help of the blogging community. But for the press card, I'd need credentials from a Canadian magazine or newspaper or CBC or whatever.

Please let me know if you can help.

Pop Culture...this blog is about Pop Culture I thought. Travelling to the homeland ya that's a good idea...what a great part of the world, so rich in tradition...these people know one thing - violence. Did you read what they did to her...they are primates - send banana's instead. What purpose does it serve to visit such filth and stink, I mean these people stink - no I'm not racist I'm just pointing out the obvious - visit I think not EVER!

Hoder- Being Iranian-born, male, living in the "satanic West," and hosting a weblog concerning Iran, I would seriously re-consider going to the homeland. I'm sure they know who you are, don't you? And, if you do go, I would definitely be watching my P's and Q's big time! Good luck! I leave for Iran in 3 weeks. I can go virtually worry-free (expect for the occasional earthquake) as long as I wear hijab, hang with my male relatives, and not act like the boisterous American that I am.

Larry, "Zahra Kazemi put herself into harm's way by going and taking photos at Evin prison on 18 Tir. Don't do anything stupid and nobody has a problem with you. That simple. I love how people make IRI look like some totalitarian regime." What the fuck! What would a regime have to do to become a totalitarian regime? Killing people for taking the wrong picture sounds like a start. Once again larry, What the Fuck?

Larry, You make the IRI look like a totalitarian regime yourself by advising Hoder not to do anything stupid. A totalitarian regime is precisely the regime under which anything and everything is "stupid". Maybe tomorrow another filmaker doing another marmoolak will be executed as counter revolutionnary. How knows. If you are not able to guarantee that nothing will happen to him, you should keep your sarcastic comments to yourself.

I hope you have a safe trip if you go. I have not had to deal with tyranny, and I thank my non-sectarian god for it. When in doubt, reload;)

Man you are giving yourself way too much credit Hoder. You can go to Iran without any worries. Zahra Kazemi put herself into harm's way by going and taking photos at Evin prison on 18 Tir. Don't do anything stupid and nobody has a problem with you. That simple. I love it how people make IRI look like some totalitarian regime. After all, they permitted Marmoolak to be played in movie theatres there, talk about a mockery of the ulama. A movie with that level of criticism against the Shah's regime for instance pre-rev would have been unimaginable.

Death To women's Rights. If you need protection bring a suitcase nuke... anything less will fail with today's police.

I would second the above comment. Well, my friend, are you saying if you got expired as a result of a pair of slippers' attack, at least the world will know about it? You cannot get any real protection. I have a suggestion though, you might have some protection if you can go there with a UN diplomatic passport, i.e. as a UN diplomat. Hmmm, of ocurse it does not sound very practical. It will take you a few years, and you would need to speak French as well, and ...hey!... you would need to live in New York! Ok, please consider going to New York, and dismount this Satan's Donkey of going to Iran my friend, unless you really have a good connection, i.e., ASAK ;)

Actually I think a better move would be to contact the Iranian embassy in Canada about your safety concerns, as well as the Canadian embassy in Iran. As long as you put them on notice and the Iranian officials are aware of it, then its much more unlikely that anything will happen to you. Thats just my advice.

"Please let me know if you can help." Yes, while you're at it give him a job too so he wouldn't come up with more lame April's fool trickery.

I'm curious as to why you think either would afford you any real protection? Has the Canadian government done anything recently that would make you think they would make a strong effort to help you were you to land in trouble in Iran?
