Over 700,000: New estimated number of blogs in Iran

It's strange that everyone is still using the old estimated 64,000 for the number of blogs in Iran which was done two years ago by an institution called NITLE.

The newest estimate is done by Blog Herald with the help of Iran-based blogging services such as PersianBlog, BlogFa, etc. It suggests there are over 700,000 blogs in Persian out there which doesn't include those hosted on international servers such as Google's blogspot etc.

This number is huge, and although I don't doubt the size of the active Iranian blogoshere, it would be really valuable to know exaclty how many active blogs there are emanating from Iran. THe reason I say this is that the more accuracy that can be attatched to these figures, the more they can be used as an argument for letting grass-roots change occur in Iran and other nations in the region, rather than opting for the incredibly destructive but more politically valuable (for some parties) option of direct intervention in Iran's soveriegn affairs.

How does this figure compare to the number of active internet users in Iran? I'm curious what the number of Iranian english bloggers are as well.

Like the text says: "these are total blog numbers and not active blog numbers (which are between 40,000 and 110,000)." Adding dead blogs to the total number of blogs isn't very helpful. That's like doing a census and adding all dead people to the total number of inhabitants. But it seems to be popular. One source claims there are 20'000 blogs, total, in Switzerland. I don't personally know every active Swiss blog, but I know for a fact that there are far less than 20'000 active blogs - probably even less than 5000. Nevertheless, it's nice to see the blogosphere grow!
