Sharon's death is bad for Iran

I guess Ariel Sharon's disappearance from the Israeli's political scene would be a blow to the moderates in Iran too.

The possibility of a limited air strike against nuclear facilities in Iran would increase if the now pure Right wing Likud gained a bigger share of power in the future government.

The centrist Kadima party would not be as successful in the coming elections without the popular Sharon and as New York Times noted yesterday, the next politician people would feel secure with would be Netanyahu.

I fear Netanyahu would turn the verbal fight with Iran into a real military attack which would, in turn, be the best excuse for the fundamentalists in Iran to completely shut down the already-weak democratic institutions and procedures.

I wish the reformist movement could grow out of Khomeini's era and take a more realistic and positive position regarding moderates in Israel. They have to start it at some point anyway.

P.S: Aparently, a new polls show Kadima would still win the election.

its ok. dont worry your little head. that p.s. you put on the end is almost common knowlege around the world. kadima has been leading the polls significantly since Sharon established it. netanyahu has his work cut-out if he thinks he'll be the next PM - dont be so melodramatic and stop trying to predict the worst case scenario when you dont hae enough evidence. you should be writing a blog as a wannabe journalist (trying to) not as a novelist.

You are very naive to think that that there are "right", "left" or centrist politicians in Israel. There is only one kind of politics in Israel. Suppress the Palestinians and annex as much land as they can. I am amazed as how naive educated people from the Middle East are in believing that there is a difference between Sharon and Netanyahu, the Labor and the Likud or any other political party and politician in Israel. The Israelis and the US have been playing this game of different political parties and ideologies in Israel for the last 50 years for the sole purpose of keeping people like you, the Palestinians and the common people in the Middle East hoping that one day there will be a peaceful solution for the Palestinians while the annexation of Palestinian land goes on no matter who is in power. The actions of Israel toward Iran doe not depend as to who comes to power after Sharon but what kind of action US will authorize against Iran.

Good day, I have just been flicking through the blogroll of Harry's Place (a British blog) and came across your site. I do not know what your views are on Israel but clearly looking at this post, it does not seem to me that you are in favour of anhilation of the state of Israel and everything to do with Zionism. Personally I am not an apologist for all the actions of the Israeli government but I start from the base assumption that I believe in the right of the state of Israel to exist. Given the recent outbursts of the Iranian President, I am pleased to see there is opposition to the President. I suppose for me the let down is that you are based in Toronto as opposed to Tehran. Never the less, please keep up the good work. Peace from London

So now Sharon is a moderate? Some of the most aggressive policies and contingency plans against Iran were approved, if not designed, by sharon himself. It just goes to show how lunatic and extremist the Israeli political structure is that this butcher of sabra and shatila gets called a moderate, even by people who should know better.
