Ahmadinejad's minister endorses blogs in Iran

Hossein Saffar-Harandi, the most fundamentalist minister of culture and Islamic guidance Iran has ever had, has not only publicly endorsed blogs, but also announced plans for including them, as well as websites, within the purview of a new government office that used to oversee only the press.

Given Iran's strict new policies against cultural products that promote "western" ideas such as feminism, liberalism, nihilism and humanism, the recent endorsement of blogs seems contradictory. The flourishing of blogs, estimated at more than 700,000 worldwide, has created a new space for self-expression on political and social matters.

In a speech during the closing ceremony of the first Festival for Islamic Revolutionary Blogs and Websites, co-sponsored by the ministry of culture, Mr Harandi celebrated the fact that everyone in Iran could now comment on current issues and "speak like a president".

The Islamic Republic endorsing and promoting blogs... ...all the better to see you and eat you, my dear. No, the mullahs will promote blogging as a means to disseminate the messages they want to get out (which is getting harder as various western governments ban Hezbollah's Al Manar) and to track down regime opponents.

Dear Hossein, I am from Munich Germany (45years old) and I want to thank you so very much for your activities and this blog which help to really change something worldwide and in your country! As you now, we Germans really think about peace, especially because of our history which is not a long time ago. I personally visited Hiroschima and I can tell you: all my hairs went of my skin. The feeling there is very intens. I whish nobody to be involved in things like this. So better do anything against this. One thing which is important for all of us: Freedom of Thinking and living in peace. The own freedom ends exactly there where the freedom of other human beings start. This is really important for all of us. Best wishes, Yours Raoul
