The lonely fight against Bush and Khamanei

The following is a threat I've received by email from a New York-based Iranian woman whose name I'm no going to reveal, but she has strong ties with the neo-conservatives working on Iran and usually introduces herself as an 'expert' on Iran, most likely without visiting it for nearly two decades, I believe.

It's the first time I'm seeing these kind of threats, but this specific one has convinced me that it's time to defend myself against some of the common accusations about my politics, integrity and affiliations.

In the newxt few weeks, I'll try to show how hard it is to be anti-Bush and anti-Khamanei at the same time.

Mr. Derakhshan,

I've been reading your stuff for years; it's excellent for comic value. As you would have also noticed I've never contacted you or ever spoken about you to anyone. SO the story you're about to read has NOTHING to do with me; I was just standing there when I heard it and I'm just going to convey to you what a room full of about 50 of the best-known western intellectuals and journalists are saying about YOU.

A couple of years ago, at a large party of intellectuals in New York City, a very well-known leftist journalist was promoting you as THE interesting Iranian for people to follow. He in fact asked what I thought of you and I simply said nothing. It was very amusing because the man could not have been more adoring and respectful of you at that time. Last night, I was with that same group of people...NOW, that exact same person saw me across the room and came running over to me and said loudly for everyone to hear: "Oh my [...], I must tell you...Hoder is either an agent of the regime OR he's mentally retarded." Then a French journalist who had followed your blog, based on that original praise you had received from the first person, replied: "Oh, Hoder is BOTH...an agent of the regime AND mentally retarded! You cannot be one without the other!"

So you see...even western leftists and liberals see right through you because you have finally managed to out yourself for who you really are...and I didn't have to lift a finger or open my mouth...you did it ALL BY YOURSELF!

Good luck young man. If I were you, I'd find myself a shack in Botswana or the Tierra del Fuego, because I know some people who will want to have a chat with you one day, in the not so distant future.

In my view this wasn't a threat. The French journalist has passed a right judgement on you; in fact you are so retarded and narrow minded as the mullahs of Iran.

This is not a threat, common man, Now, i think there is something wrong with you.

I guess i'm just used to receiving much worse emails than this, because i fail to see the direct threat, though it certainly is menacing. i think iranians who blog in english have been under intensified attack by neo-con types, and i really think we need to make an organized response to them. All of us should be archiving these threats and and keeping track so that we can take whatever legal actions are available to us.

Hoder, this is all a creation of your own desires to be important. It is highly unlikely that this stuff ever happened! I only write this comment because you seem to think we're all dummies!

I think the problem with this Lady and many others is that they see the world in Black & White. In other words they can only analyse and assess people by comparing them to some known behavior or believes. Anyone not matching any of their known models is considered to be mentaly retarded. In such model you are either right or left. Any one defending some values of right and some of left is considered as retarded.

BTW, if you ever wish to take legal action, the wording does consitute a threat.

we're supposed to regard HODER in light of what some Wetsren "leftist" or "french" journalists have to say about him? what do these fuckers know about iran? have they even cared to learn a few words of farsi here and there? look. if anything we should be saying a lot about anglosaxons, their culture, their media and all, we all speak english very fluently and we can read between the lines too. what the fuck these arrogant retards know. i say fuck that. we see hoder for who he is. hoder is a real guy. i don;t agree with him at all. i hated him when he step foot inside israel and indirectly legitimized the apartheid. i don;t agree when he attacks ahmadi neghad based on the guy's looks and fashion. but i admire him for being non partisan and independent. thats all he got. if you're this clean, you deserve to have a big ego.

Agent of the regime? Why? Is it because you believe America attacking Iran and forcing a regime change through force is a bad idea?

hoder, I read the letter, it is not really a threat. by the way I like your stuff and disagree with many of your points and agree with some. Personally I think you think too much of yourself (which of course could be caused by me being jealous) but man get your head up your ass. you have enemies, you have friends, that is life. and you are a great example of why Iranians are great individuals and a miserable nation. take care

I have been following up on your logs for a couple of years and I've seen neither an agent nor a mentally challenged person here. You have certain ideas and have every right to use your weblog to present them. I am just amazed by the magnitude of lacklasting tolernace among many Iranians in dealing with contradicting ideas. It can only be attributed to the prolonged tyranny and pressure they have grown into, turning many into small-time dictators missing the much needed essence of democracy: respectful coexistence. This [woman] behaves like many wanna-be's scattered around the globe trying so hard for a piece of public recognition. This "intellecutal" appears to have missed the very core element of intellectuality: understanding. Keep up with the good work. This planet is big enough for all of us.

LoL. Ali, you're right! Hoder, your ego is your downfall.

I am not surprised. What ever you are, an agent or a mad man, your style is different and Iranian politicians cant do different! They feel pressured and jealous at the same time even-though you might not even be a threat to them. And god knows we need more people like you. people who are themselves without pretending and without hypocrisy. Dont worry about a bunch of politically-obsessed anti-IRI a**-holes. At least Hakha was entertaining. These guys are just a pain in the a**. Keep up the good work man.

Hossein, the threat is so shallow and the whole thing reeks so much of the usual Iranian green-from-envy that I am wondering why you took it seriously enough to post it on your weblog. The fact that people care so much about one person and what he thinks is amazing. Hossein is one among the many and his opinions, agent of the 'regime' or mentally retarded, are his own business. You should be more relax man and don't care so much. Write for your own sake and don't care what they say...
- By: Khodadad on May 25, 2006
---------
I don't have any idea why these people are threatening you. Obviously, what people are recomending you to do (learn more) is true. You really need that Hossein. Being an intellectual doesn't have anything to do with knowing wines and listening to classical music (as you mentioned once). You know, you are wasting yourself by trying to write without having much to write about. Go ahead and learn. Not only from books. You can learn a lot from people too. Or from anything else that you like more. But definitely you need to know more. But still, threatening you as an IR agent, is the most ridiculus thing I am reading on interenet these days. I hope it has nothing to do with your anti-war opinions. Anyways, I think the best way is to publish what they say about you in your weblog. Let everyone see it.

Do not let your critics to define you. Hoder, some of us know whom you are referring to with this post. If that is the exact text of an email from that specific unnamed person, she does sound rather unsophisticated. (Front Page magazine seem to have really low standards when it comes to giving column space for personal rants masquerading as ‘political commentary’.) So it seems you have been accused of being a spy (I am yawing as I write this, can’t our simpleton compatriots come up with more interesting accusations to throw at each other?) Many progressive blogs, on a daily basis are accused of being ‘Liberal’ as if it is a bad word or a way of thinking, or being unpatriotic because of exercising their right to dissent. Our satirists, artists and social activist are constantly under attack from far right and those with no journalistic credential who have a platform to throw ‘garbage’ at any opposing view. Grow a thicker skin, document everything you receive as you go along and don’t stop writing. (Not that I necessarily share your opinions or care about what you write, but nevertheless I strongly care that you continue writing.) On a lighter note, it seems you have finally arrived, if Iranian Anne Coulter is sending you personal threats!

This was a typical way for some persians to show how jealous they are of someone. Just remember Bill Clinton was the one who had lots of enemies since he was clever and had significant impact on the society. No body is an enemy of Botswana's president. You have enemies when you do something beyond other people's capabilities. So, just enjoy the critiques you receive. I don't say whatever you say is clever but I admire you as a frontier. Good luck.

I find the sincere comments of this lady whose name has been so deviously revealed, as a genuine effort to convey other people’s opinion of Hoder. I’m still puzzled how the so-called “Hoder the Journalist” has interpreted the above letter as a threatening one. Frankly, no word that might have been construed as anything resembling a threat can be found in her entire text, except possibly and mysteriously the word “chat” may have been in some strange way translated as an intimidating word. I don’t know what “chat” means in Canada but in America it means: “talk”, “converse”, “make conversation”, “chitchat”, “yak” and “shoot the breeze”. Unless Hoder considers himself as “breeze”, I don’t see where all the fuss is about! If Hoder is annoyed when some accuse him for his politics or affiliations, he must then stop affiliating others and accusing them so quickly with the neo-conservatives. What is good for the goose is good for the gander. If it is OK to accuse others of having strong ties with neo-conservatives, so it is to call Hoder a pro-IRI lackey, especially when he is known to have had personal invitation to dinner party of President of Iran, the madman, Ahmadinejad in NY (see http://www.flickr.com/photos/hoder/53544762/in/datetaken/ ). I do not believe Hoder’s intention was to sincerely conceal the author’s name. By deceitfully revealing her first name, he surely has blown his own cheap scheme of trying to belittle her in a desperate attempt to gain popularity for himself. A true Journalist would surely know how not to reveal someone’s name, but Hoder is certainly not one.

I found it no more than a simple hate-mail from a simple minded person. The fact that the author of that email utilized implied threat in her communication, spoke volumes to me of her immaturity. Now I'm left wondering for what reason such a person could be found in a "room full of about 50 of the best-known western intellectuals," twice!

She is right. It seems you are mentally retarded, not for supporting reformist because it is your positive point, for your some idea which you wrote in your persian blog. I don't how some institues or newspapers published your idea. However sometimes you did some good job.May be it is better to studying more or even going to university to getting a degree. You desire to being famous without studying so sometimes you look like an idiot.I am not sure your the I.R. regime agent.

that's an iranian way od threatening somebosy. Yes, some people from a very scary plave will come after you. For those who think in the US we dont have crap, here you go.

I like some of your opinions, and some I don't, and I'm sure I'm not up to speed on every opinion you've ever voiced. But I'm not going to go around and slander you because I don't like your ideas. A real intellectual wouldn't just be accusing others of being an agent of any group without concrete proof. If this individual has documents, specific copies of bank records, witness testimony, or something, I'd be open to her opinion. I am so tired of every one and their mother accusing random people that bother to speak up of being an agent of the regime. As it stands now, it just looks like this person wants to blame you for her problems. And if this lady has so many powerful friends and she is so righteous, how come she isn't doing anything about the regime herself?
- By: sheernejad on May 24, 2006

I'm very surprised that threats are part of the currency of this lady's critique. What ever she has to say about Hoder's work, at least his literature is absent of threats to other people's security. What a state of affairs when journalists are intimidated in this way. To the author of this letter to Hoder: I'm afraid your methods undermine any credibility your criticisms may otherwise have had.
