Cheers to realism

Long ago, like many other observers, I had predicted and even suggested that a conservative government with Khamanei's approval and trust can easily do things Reformists could hardly dream of.

Now, after Khamanei publicly approved the direct talks with the U.S. in a really historical gesture, and the silly letter Ahmadinejad wrote to Bush, Ms. Rice has announced that U.S. wants to talk to Iranians.

I'm extremely happy that Rice has brought back realism to the White House. I congratulate her and Mr. Bush for finally realizing that the foreign policy advice they were getting from Mr. Cheney office has only resulted in failure and incompetence.

When I read in the Newsweek a while ago, when Cheney almost killed his hunting mate by accident, that Bush doesn't see Cheney every week for lunch any more, I kind of guessed this would to a whole new foreign policy, especially when it came to Iran.

Neither can I hide my happiness about the fact that the establishment in Iran is increasingly becoming realistic and rational.

i think you are confused about the meaning of the word "realism" in the context of international relations. it betrays your lack of education. you have to read up on stuff BEFORE you start writing - its called research. also, its not an "offer" from the US its an ultimatum - its a conditional "offer". but it does show that the US has learnt and understood that any military option is out of the question.

With oil prices high and the US military bogged down in Iraq this may be the most opportune time for Iran to move ahead quickly with its nuclear development. I think US/Europe are just trying to delay Iran's development until oil prices drop down again and Iran loses its present advantage.

Why aren't any Iranian bloggers writing about the protests happening all over Iran?

It's hard to be optimistic about the Rice announcement because in reality the red lines remain the same: The U.S. demands absolutely no refinement and Iran claims it has a right to refinement.

A whole lot of nothing. An empty gesture to please Europeans and American leftists. Collision course is unchanged. Only one thing can change the current track of confrontation, and that is unilateral abandonment of the nuclear program by the IRI. I think this is just posturing. To make it glaringly obvious to the whole world that Iran really is hell bent on having a nuclear arsenal. As if any rational person could think otherwise, by now.

Both sides are acting like silverbacks and I think you're a tad optimistic in thinking such will end now.

Iran has been playing off the hard-line stance of the Bush administration. They ask for dialogue, appearing open to reasonable talks, knowing this bolsters their stance in world opinion without giving anything up themselves. By agreeing to talk, we call their bluff - We need to go further though. Agree to unconditional talks. Put the pressure back on Iran to compromise. When they balk, as they will, we have cause for sanctions or force.

The Persian people (but not the current government) are a natural friend of all Americans. This estrangement of the last 27 years is unnatural, and unwanted by both our peoples. Our governments must see this, and must correct it.

i hardly think this will really go anyway. i would think rather that it is posturing since most have been critical of the US's refusal to talk. and anyways they said they would join the european talks IF iran stopped enrichment, which i dont think Ahmadinejad and co will do, since that would in a way be admitting defeat or giving in. i do hope that cooler heads do prevail. sz
