'Modern' Life in Iran?

Have you noticed that after Ahmadinejad's win, all of a sudden Iran has become the country of praying old women in chador for the media?

A few years before it was all about how young the population is and how this has affected the whole country in its values, behaviour and mood.

So it's definitely sad to see even a rather progressive publication such as Newsweek is falling into the same trap. Just take a look at its recent black and white photo album labeled 'Modern Life in Iran' and discover how the Newsweek sees Iran and how much it tries to break the sterotypical image of this complex country.

I wonder how the Traditional life in Iran would look like.

Time Magazine has created an excellent response to Newsweek's atrocious photo-editorial. Check it out: http://www.time.com/time/photoessays/2007/paolo_woods_iran/ They also have a few different pictures in the print version. Time presents a much more balanced and intellectual look at Iran. Now you know the difference between Time and Newsweek.

My God, you're right! Everyone wears chadors and prays. On the other hand, I think the photos that only show the people in north Tehran are also misleading.

This says a lot about Newsweek's target audience. The caption reads, "...images of Iranians as they are: mad,..." Any reader that finds it perfectly reasonable for Newsweek to describe an entire population as "mad" probably has a low literacy level and difficulty comprehending complex ideas. No wonder it sits on newsstands next to the National Inquirer.

Of course "we" have noticed this! Such "covering" of "realities" are possible where ever you want to have it portrayed this way! It's just a question of a focus you are deciding to put on for "catching the reality". I don't - for example - remember having seen other portrayings of people and life about the former Sovjetunion having appeared in the western media. One also could simply call this "intentional" ... combined with the question qui bono / to whom it serves? And as well I remember the pictures taken from the "huge" demonstrations in Tehran re Mohammed-caricatures having been spread all over the world and made believe as if the half town was in turmoil and rage. While the official ZDF-correspondent Ulrich Tilgner (living years since in Tehran!) himself was right there on the place and counted about 200 demonstrants. As mentioned: All a matter of focus, how you set it and whom it serves!
