How BBC World Service was used by Churchill in 1953 coup in Iran
BBC World Service is celebrating its 75th anniversary. They must be happy about such achievement and they deserve to.
But for the rest of world two aspects of its operations, at least, are very problematic:
a) That its funding is entirely coming from The Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and therefore it affects the perception of its editorial independence among the audiences
b) That history shows how such close ties with the government has actually produced embarrassing moments. The best example for that could be the BBC's role in relation to the CIA-MI6-engineered coup against the Iranian prime minister, Mohamad Mossadegh, in 1953 which is documented in Stephen Kinzer's book, All the Shah's Men:
Roosevelt told the Shah that he was in Iran on behalf of the American and British secret services, and that this would be confirmed by a code word the Shah would be able to hear on the BBC the next night.
Churchill had arranged that the BBC would end its broadcast day by saying not "It is now midnight," as usual, but "It is now exactly midnight." Such assurances were hardly necessary, the Shah replied. (p. 9-10)
Don't you think this would make the whole population of Iran always suspicious of the BBC's journalism?

to Ali Ahmadi: no disrepect intended, but actually you should do some research yourself before posting. Straight from the horses mouth

You are SUCH a hypocrite! I feel sorry for you. You have appeared on the World Service yourself for interviews. If they called you tomorrow and asked if you'd like to come on the radio you would be at Bush House like a shot because you are a PUBLICITY WHORE!!! Either stand by your guns or don't knock a gift-horse in the mouth (that's an English expression, dumb-ass). You clearly know VERY little about how the World Service works.

Dear Hossein,
Thank you for questioning the BBC's reliability as a news organization. Maybe you should stick to IRNA so you can hear minute-by-minute reports of how there is universal contentment and harmony in Iran, that all is well, and that--under the guidance of the Supreme Leader--our blessed nation is making progress against its vicious zionist foes!
(By the way I'd like to commend you for your improved grasp of critical theory. You have gotten much better at parroting Laclau, Said, et al.!)

Dear Hossein
I hope you do read your comments and I hope you read this one. Although i disagree with you on many issues but i do respect you in a way that you do your research before posting something.
The book you mentioned is full of lies and the topic you picked is the biggest one. BBC did not have any program at midnight back in 1953! so how could they say midnight or exactly midnight!!!! I hope you correct your mistake ... cheers
