We'll enjoy seeing you Mullah pimp in prison, a reader writes to me

I just received this gracious email from a reader, whose name I keep to myself. It's quite telling about the dominant discourse among the Iranian opposition (Pahlavists, Rajavists, and Rafsanjanists):

Hossein Jendeh,

I've just been talking to a group of university students from Rome and Florence who have been reading all about you. Apparently EVERYONE in Italy knows that you're a psycho pimp whose daddy is a servant of the akhounds. Ha Ha. You're the only one who's in a coma kosou boy.

The first thing they asked me is, are you Iranian? Do you know this guy who calls himself Hoder? What's wrong with this guy....he thinks people are stupid and don't know how to recognize a liar? So I laughed and told them that everyone now knows that you're a Mullah pimp and that your daddy is one of the regime's biggest pimps.

By the time we're all done with you (oh yes, there are hundreds of people out there exposing you and if you only knew just who knows about you, you'd have a heart attack). Keep up the good work because you're the only one who has NO IDEA what is being dug up out there and who is doing the digging. By the time we're done with you, your bosses back in Tehran will have to drag you back to Tehran for having made a bigger mess of your mission and you'll be in Evin's 209 for a little slap and tickle. I'll enjoy the news of you in those dungeons.

Dear B.F., I can not even start to imagine how much time you spent in writing this marvelous comment (I'd rather call it an essay), or how long have you been thinking it through. All I can say is, you have articulated beautifully every thought that had ever crossed my mind, for which I either didn't have the right words, or just didn't know how to express it. I put this note to tell you how happy I am to see there are other people who think (apparently) exactly like me, and are intelligent enough to be able to express their thoughts in the most logical manner. Thank you.

You are wonderful Hossein. Not only you and I do know it, but also even those knuckleheads sending you those emails (as otherwise there was no point in sending those bullshits). Keep going on. You are doing a great job, far beyond what I could imagine at first.

Nice wording! And guess what, I know why you have published this one out of tens or possibly thousands of hate mails you receive every week! You needed to quote "The first thing they asked me is, are you Iranian? Do you know this guy who calls himself Hoder?" and tell everybody about the international respect you have harvested with your work nd this is the best solution to do this! Nice move. Good for you.

Even though these petty people don't count, I'm glad you post their comments for reference. I also loved the video you posted from screaming Banafsheh Zand. Keep up the good work showing the true characters of these so-called activists.

obviously this guy is getting his info only from mainstream media. What you (Hoder) have argued has been outlined in many of the more progressive online news websites. I urge people to check them out. Examples: Democracy Now, Counterpunch, etc.

Mr Hossein Derakhshan 12 January 2008 Dear Hossein, I read your blog almost daily, not because I necessarily agree with all your views, but because your views offer alternative perspectives in comparison with those that I read elsewhere. Exposing oneself solely to what one agrees with, necessarily leads to intellectual blindness and ultimately intellectual atrophy. It is truly sad to see that the level of what is supposed to be an intellectual public discourse has been so debased that one is often ashamed of reading the corresponding texts; this lady or gentleman clearly has the mentality of a child (and of a retarded child at that), quite aside from the fact that threatening others (as this person clearly does) is what Mafiosi do; in a civilised forum one uses reason not abusive and threatening language. If this person thinks that she or he is defending a worthy cause, she or he must think again: hating those who entertain views different from our own, is a clear sign of intolerance and betrays lack of a basic understanding of what constitutes freedom of expression. I should not like to see any country, not least Iran, being governed by this individual and her or his ilk. This loutish individual displays all the characteristics of a demented dictator, intolerant of views that oppose hers or his. I should like to recommend everyone, old and young, who has not studied the history of modern Iran to do so. Such study will make clear that as a nation we seem (and have proved time and again) quite incapable of realising that there exists such a thing as "loyal opposition"; the nation seems to see herself as consisting of two disjoint groups of individuals: loyal subjects and traitors. One other point that I should like to raise is related to the fact that this lady or gentleman sees as her or his basic right to insult your father. This is regrettable on at least two fundamental grounds. Firstly, this is *your* blog and not your father's blog, so that whatever you write in your blog does not warrant abuse of you father's name and reputation. Secondly, every individual is responsible for her or his acts; consequently, whatever your father may or may not be doing is entirely his business and assuming that he may be doing something incorrect (which I absolutely do not know; am not even interested to know, as I am not reading his blog, which he may or may not have), that does not mean that you, as his son, should be held responsible for that. This is an essential cornerstone of our basic human rights as we understand them. Some Iranians are quite undeservedly proud of the fact that Cyrus the Great was the author of the first Human Rights Act in the recorded history of the humanity. Yet, in practice, these individuals prove, time and again, that they are utterly ignorant of some of the basic principles underlying this very charter. This individual seems to entertain the wish to see you (and perhaps a host of other people) in the Evin prison. I ask this individual to think again about her or his deepest motivations. Instruments of Law and Justice are not means for settling personal disputes or vendetta. It seems to me that if this individual had the power, she or he would consign you to the Evin prison, yet it is not clear to me for what offence. For having expressed your views, perhaps? (Insofar as I am aware, you only write, but in doing so you are only exercising one of your basic human rights.) Is this person not showing the very signs of the mental ailment from which all deranged despots the world over suffer? Instruments of Law and Justice are not means to enforce one's sick and unlawful desires; they are to enforce laws that reflect the collective will of a nation in matters of right and wrong and of justice. Lastly, I take this opportunity and point out, humbly, that you, Hossein, have the deplorable tendency to vilify people. People's deeds are often the outcome of a very complex mental and social process which cannot be reduced into such basic components as loyalty and treachery. Why cannot we have a civilised discourse on social and political matters without needing constantly to prove that we are not traitors? Why are we so constantly narrowing the space of the public discourse? To be frank with you, although I admire your love for Iran, I often feel that you act in a rather reactionary fashion (in the broadest sense of the word). If you have any doubts about my statement, please read some of your headlines: you often dictate (I suppose unconsciously) what your readers should think about, say, an article (or of its author or of the person discussed in that article) of which you present the link; they often remind me of the headlines of Rupert Murdoch's press. Please treat others as mature enough to make their own minds on what they are about to read. On close inspection, those who you may have the inclination to call traitors and native informers may prove to love Iran not less than you. And this is what ultimately matters, as politicians come and go and dominant political viewpoints of today will perhaps be quite marginal tomorrow or the day after that, and vice versa. Of course, people may act incorrectly or unwisely, or both, but this is not a sufficient reason to make them out as native informers or traitors --- some may be, but many are not. I wish you all the very best. With kind regards, BF.
